1982
The beginning
After a scholarship at the University of Northern Iowa and a career-ending injury, Mike found his true calling in the car business at age 23.
1995
A vision realized
With strong personal and financial backing, Mike took the leap to open his own store, doubling his team size and adding franchises over the following years.
Today
A family enterprise
Today, Mike Molstead Motors is a true family operation, with three of his sons and his daughter-in-law continuing the legacy of hardworking service.
Dedicated leadership
Since 2001, Mike Molstead courageously managed his health following a stage four lung cancer diagnosis, all while continuing to lead the dealership he cared so deeply about. He balanced ongoing medical challenges with the daily operations and growth of the business, never losing sight of what mattered most.
This chapter of his life was defined by unwavering dedication to his team and to the Charles City community, ensuring the dealership remained a trusted and reliable local institution.
That spirit of hope, faith, and perseverance will forever be part of his legacy.

Giving back to Charles city
Education Support: Directed contributions exceeding $400,000 toward local schools, including a $150,000 initiative to complete the new competition gym at Charles City Middle School.
Holiday Traditions: A long-standing family and dealership tradition of providing food and gifts to families in need during the Christmas season.
Local Leadership: Over 25 years of service as an assistant coach for high school and middle school sports, alongside active support for the Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce.
